The dynamics of inter-organizational ties during crises: empirical evidence and computational analysis

چکیده

Organizations often rely on social networks in order to garner resources for survival, in particular when faced with a crisis. From a resource dependence perspective, this paper addresses two issues regarding the dynamics of inter-organizational ties during crisis situations: (a) what is the usual process organizations use, and (b) how efficient is such a process? Two real world crisis cases show that, in a crisis situation, organizations tend to follow a cascade process in which they rely on stronger ties first until there is additional resource needs before activating weaker ties. This process can go on until all the resource needs are met and the stable stage is reached. Results from a computational model simulating such a cascade process and a contrast process, the sequential/random process, show that organizations following the cascade process can exhibit much higher efficiency, though there is a decreasing effect as the severity of the crisis increases. This study has not only illustrated the real world process of organizational ties during crises empirically but also provided theoretical rationales for such inter-organizational dynamics. 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Innovation, learning and cluster dynamics

This chapter offers a theory and method for the analysis of the dynamics, i.e. the development, of clusters for innovation. It employs an analysis of three types of embedding: institutional embedding, which is often localized, structural embedding (network structure), and relational embedding (type and strength of ties). The analysis is conducted from a perspective of both competence (learning)...

Cliques Role in Organizational Reputational Influence: A Social Network Analysis

Empirical support for the assumption that cliques are major determinants of reputational influence derives largely from the frequent finding that organizations which claimed that their cliques’ connections are influential had an increased likelihood of becoming influential themselves. It is suggested that the strong and consistent connection in cliques is at least partially responsible for the ...

Threshold Effects in Sticky Information Philips Curve: Evidence from Iran

During the last decade, several studies have argued that sticky information model proposed by Mankiw and Reis (2002), in which firms update their information occasionally rather than instantaneously, explains some stylized facts about the inflation dynamics. Sticky information pricing model successfully captures the sluggish movement of aggregate prices in response to monetary policy shocks. De...

Organizational Performance Under Critical Situations - Exploring the Role of Computer Modeling in Crisis Case Analyses

Organizations sometimes face critical situations or crises that can induce severe consequences or even disasters if wrong decisions are made. The bulk of crisis management research has relied heavily on case study methods yet often with rhetorical or even inconsistent suggestions. With an exclusive focus on crisis prevention, the issue of how organizations can maintain good performance when fac...
